All 32 pieces start face-down on a 4×8 grid. Player 1 flips the first piece — its color becomes Player 1's side. On your turn, flip a hidden piece, move a revealed piece one step to an empty adjacent square, or capture an eligible enemy. Ordinary pieces capture adjacent enemies by rank; the Cannon instead jumps exactly one screen and may capture any enemy rank. Capture by rank: a higher or equal rank captures a lower or equal one. Exceptions: Soldier (1) captures General (7), but General cannot take Soldier.
